Time Period: HEIAN (794-1185) Imperial court moves to Heiankyo (now Kyoto) to escape domination of Nara's Buddhist establishment. Official contacts with China stop in 838.
Buddhism, in combination with native Shinto beliefs, continues to flourish. Flowering of classical Japanese culture aided by invention of kana (syllabary for writing Japanese language). Court women produce the best of era's literature. Murasaki Shikibu's Tale of Genji (ca. 1002) is the world's first novel. Court undergoes decline of power with rise of provincial bushi (warrior class).
Yakito Makoto was born 830 during the Heian dynanisty of Japan's feudal past. His ranking at birth was some what royalty, being the son of a Shogun and a beautifully gifted writer. As proof of his linage and place in the world, he was marked by the highest and most powerful of priests with crimson dots upon his forehead. but it didn't stop there.
Over the years, even during the time of peace, Makoto, though being of a very innocent mind and the time period itself being just as innocent as well peaceful, was trained for in the art of war and stealth. For each level of training, more dots where added to the boys body, as targets for enemy warriors and trainees. As the number of targets grew, so did Makoto's skill and speed (thus, the point of the dots).
Along side with the heartless and almost meaningless training in fighting, Makoto was taught various things with art; words and paint. Not being as artisticly talented as his mother, he still tried, just to keep a smile on his mothers face but... the smiles soon faded away when Makoto's mother died from scarlet fever.
Ten years after that day, Makoto's everyday life became some what of a sad shedule. Raising early for half day training, then sleeping the rest of the day locked in his room, only to wake up in the dead of the night and seemingly 'haunt' the passageways and gardens of the Yakito house.
Many a time, Makoto's father has pressured him into finding a wife and marry so that his place as the areas Shogun will be confirmed and set for him but since his mothers death, Makoto hardly speaks to women
And that is where this boys journal begins, as of late on his nightly visits to the gardens he has been hearing things- even though there isn't any
